Liam and I crashed into the top of a tree. Its branches were bare for the winter, but its wood was plenty hard enough. The collision knocked all the snow from its branches and the breath out of me.

Liam was out cold.

‘You should have shifted to save him,’ Nick scolded when he arrived.

‘You shouldn’t have breathed dragonfire on him,’ I snapped.

‘That was for you.’

‘Nice.’

‘You shouldn’t have stolen my clothes.’

‘Arguing isn’t going to solve anything.’ I ignored Nick and looked at Liam’s wound. About a dozen of the scales on his back were burnt and misshapen, some skin left bare by the damage. It looked pink.

Like a sunburn.

It made him vulnerable. My chest tightened and I felt awful at my role in this.

Now I really wanted to puke.

‘He’ll be all right,’ Adrian said, hovering beside us. ‘He’ll sleep off the booze, then just need a scale repair.’

‘And who’s going to do that?’ Garrett asked quietly, his tone full of recrimination.

‘This is not my fault,’ I said.

Neither Nick nor Garrett appeared to be convinced. So they were going to turn against me, one at a time, were they? First Garrett was angry with me and now Nick. Maybe it was a good thing that Liam was out cold.

At least Adrian wasn’t giving me a hard time.

Maybe boot camp showed you who your real friends were.

‘Is everyone all right?’ Isabelle called. ‘Nick? Are you hurt?’

I turned my back on Nick and Garrett and talked to Adrian. ‘Can you carry Liam back to the cabin?’

I figured I’d walk by myself.

I wasn’t much for the company of my so-called friends.
